Herbal / Nutraceuticals.
Herbs are the complex structures containing thousands of bioactive molecules or active principles working synergistically for this desired disease preventive effect. Standardized herbal extracts or phytochemicals are the concentrated dried residues of a fluid extraction prepared from herbage.
Normally the fluid doing the extraction is critical since it must "extract" (or bring out of the herb material into the fluid) all of the important medicinal ingredients within the herbage. The solvent varies as per constitution of herb, and ranges from water to alcohol to even liquid carbon dioxide coupled with criticality of extraction temperature and length of time. This dried residue is shifted to vacuum drying (freeze-drying, or lyophilization) for final phytochemical product.
